Group

The folklore group Laiksne was founded in 1993 in Riga, Latvia. Its repertoire consists ofLatvian seasonal ritual and lyric songs as well as traditional dance music. The group’svocal style is firmly rooted in Latvian tradition but Laiksne also allows present dayinfluences to creep in. Songs and melodies come from all around Latvia, slightly morefrom Latgale, in the East, where folklore traditions are well preserved. Also the name ofthe group comes from Eastern Latvia where laiksne means water lily. Laiksne performs vocal and instrumental folk and post folk compositions.

 

Laiksne’s instrumentalcompositions utilize several Latvian traditional instruments - kokles (Latvian traditionalpsaltery), pipes, violin, accordion, mandolin and percussion as well as some moderninstruments - guitar and bass guitar.Laiksne has participated in various festivals in Latvia, the Czech Republic, Poland,Belarus, Slovenia, Russia, Sweden, Estonia and Lithuania. The group has recordedseveral CDs: Kyukova dzagyuze (Songs of the Cockoo Bird) in 2001, Jāņu nakti zeltarasa (Midsummer Night’s Golden Dew) in 2002, Es jauna būdama (Me Being Young) in2003, Putra (The Porridge) in 2010 and Es čigāna meita biju (I Was the Gypsy’sDaughter) in 2013. Laiksne has also participated in several folk music compilations, forinstance Sviests (2005) and Sviests 2 (2007). Music
